Sew 223 – Recognising op-shop potential

Jane wears upcycled wrapPart of the pleasure of op-shopping is about ‘the find’. I got this beautiful hand-knit for a very good price ($7) – considering the cost of the wool and the time involved in knitting it.

I love its shape, character and warmth, but it didn’t look very exciting languishing on the hanger. I brought it home, washed it, put a few hand-stitches in the armholes where the yarn seemed to have stretched a little, then secured it at the front with a big pin. I teamed it with an op-shop-found wool skirt, which had a couple of small holes which I mended on the sewing machine. I love the irregular shape and colour tones of this wrap, and enjoy wearing it very much.

Sew 124 – Upcycled in Coolah

Casey's homespun and knitted jumper upcycled by mendingVery excited to have my first Upcycled exhibition now hanging in Pandora Gallery at Coolah in New South Wales as a celebration of natural fibres and (re)fashion from today until May 16.

Thanks to my ARLP leadership colleague Ele Cook and gallery coordinator Jennie Stephens, I’ve been able to mount this exhibition to showcase some of my repurposed reject garments 365-day Sew it Again creations to raise awareness of the ethical, social and environmental issues of textile waste.  Continue reading

Sew 77 – Twin-set, no pearls

upcycled hand-knit twin-set

This hand-knitted coral pink wool twin-set is an op shop find which I’ve upcycled and wear with a contrasting jumper-skirt.

There was a time when people looked down their noses at home-made clothing. That’s all changed now that cheap store-bought stuff is a dime a dozen and one-off hand-made originals are being re-appreciated.

Knitting and crocheting has been rediscovered as a craft of skill, creativity and relaxation. What fun to come across Woollylatte’s, an exclusive knitting boutique and coffee house just around the corner from where I’m staying with my friends Pat and Bruce at Wembley in Perth. Continue reading
